PROF. DR . SYED HANEEF AHMAD NAQVI



Budaun, Uttar Pradesh: Noted Urdu critic and author of more than 20 books, Prof. Dr. Syed. Haneef Ahmad Naqvi passed away Saturday night (Dec. 22) at his native place Sahaswan in Budaun district of Uttar Pradesh. He was seventy six. He is survived by wife, a son and five daughters.

قبائے جان اپنی سی   رہے ہیں
ورق ورق سوزن ِقلم سے
 کہ ہم  کتابوں میں جی رہے  ہیں
  نہ مار  پائے گی ہم کو دنیا

Prof. Naqvi was born on Oct. 17, 1936 in Sahaswan, Budaun. After getting primary education in the village, he did graduation and post-graduation in Urdu from Vikram University in Ujjain in 1959 and 1961 respectively. He got both degrees with first division and first position. He got doctoral degree from the university in 1968.
Prof. Haneef Naqvi joined the Department of Urdu, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, in 1970 and was its Head of the Department till 2000. After joining BHU, he did MA in Persian with first division and first position in 1973.
Prof. Naqvi was among experts on Urdu and Ghalib.
Dr. Syed Hasan Abbas, Head of Persian Department , Banaras Hindu University has been very close to Prof. Naqvi. Dr. Abbas in his condolence message expressed grief and termed his demise as irreparable loss to Urdu. With his death, a mountain of Urdu has fallen, said Dr. Abbas.

May his soul rest in eternal peace , May Allah Almighty grant him the highest place in Jannat – ul – Firdaus , and give his family all strength they needed to overcome the great loss.  [ Ameen ]
Prof Dr. Syed Hanif Ahmed Naqvi was my maternal Uncle. It is a great loss not in the family of Syed  Al – e – Ahmed Shah but also a great loss to Urdu Literature. He was the great learned personality of Urdu Literature not only in India but also in Pakistan.
